Non conosco un primo uso canonico. Il file Jargon descrive il file README come:

Hacker's-eye introduction traditionally included in the top-level directory of a Unix source distribution

Quindi ho dato un'occhiata ad alcuni alberi sorgente unix precoci, per gentile concessione di The Unix Tree (fornito dalla Unix Heritage Society e Unix Archive ). Alcuni file README trovati nei primi unicesetti includono:

• / sys / source / lex / README da PWB 1.0 (luglio 1977) - il più presto che ho potuto trovare
• / usr / doc / README della settima edizione (gennaio 1979 ) - il primo che ho potuto trovare per l'intero albero dei sorgenti

Ho preso una lezione di Sistemi Operativi lo scorso anno e ricordo che il mio professore mi ha detto che avevano dei README (veri file stampati fisici) per tutte le loro schede perforate e nastro magnetico e praticamente qualsiasi altra cosa che fosse un "programma". A quel tempo ne avevi davvero bisogno a causa del processo laborioso che comportava la creazione, la gestione e tutto il resto. Questi README a volte includevano anche le effettive stampe di come le schede perforate dovevano essere perforate come una forma di controllo degli errori e di debug.

La convenzione apparentemente segue anche il vecchio sistema in quanto con tutte le schede perforate veniva allegato un "reem" di carta con la scritta README in maiuscoletto stampato, con tutte le istruzioni per l'uso e il caricamento delle schede perforate nel sistema.

Per un riferimento temporale, sarebbe stato negli anni '60. Ma il sistema di schede perforate esiste dal 1700 per il controllo di telai "automatizzati", quindi forse anche vecchio come quello.

Il più vecchio che ho trovato negli archivi PDP-10 è l'UIS LISP " READ.ME "   dal quarto nastro della libreria DECUS, con un timestamp di 27-mar-1975 :

Sfortunatamente, molti dei mini SO precedenti non supportano a   [unique] timestamp nella struttura della directory del nastro e / o del disco, quindi   è difficile capire quando un documento è stato modificato per l'ultima volta.

Il file non ha solo un timestamp del 27 marzo 1975, ma è facilmente firmato e datato nel file stesso :

Modifica: scorrendo intorno agli archivi PDP-10 Ho trovato un precedente README.TXT del 27 novembre 1974, entrambi timestamp e firmato nel file :

    SPICE SINC and SLIC

described in the Applications Software Bulletin Volume 4.

requirements:

SPICE requires FORTRAN-10 version 4 because of its use of Right adjusted Holerith data. Executes in about 47K.

it also includes this file, the FOROTS to go with the SAVes and the source for SECOND.MAC, the timing routine. SPICE is broken into three parts: 1SPICE.FOR, 2 and 3.

There is a printed document to describe each of the programs. These are included in the DECUS packet. The documentation and programs were origionally developed by the E.E. department of the Univ. of Calif. at Berkley on a CDC 6400. Except to convert the FORTRAN to the DECsystem-10 no changes have been made to the programs. For the test data SLIC and SINC have shown a slight variation with respect to the 6400, SPICE shows no variation.
